Happy New Year!

I have been very remiss on providing updates on the house - thankfully our builder is more on top building than I am of writing! I remain so amazed at what progress has been made and how well it is all coming together.




So much has happened in the past month:

• tile is done
  
• hardwood is done
  
• painting is so close to being done (Brian has done it all!)
  
• kitchen cabinets are in
  
• vanities are going in


• outside lights are going up


• inside lights are done



• BUT most importantly we had a wonderful Christmas holiday and new year! We even had a white Christmas this year and the boys so enjoyed the snow.

I was able to have a 2 week vacation for Christmas and Brian spent it painting the house, so the boys and I were able to spend a lot of quality time together. We even went and picked out the carpet for their rooms and I think they all chose wisely: Barek - dark blue; Drake - dark gray, frieze; Trent - light gray. We'll order all the carpet next week so it is ready whenever Mike needs it.

I walked in to the kitchen tonight and got butterflies in my tummy. I couldn't believe the cabinets. (Picture is from last night - halfway through installation.) All of the cabinets are in now - even the islands. It took them only 3 days to install the kitchen. Brian and I just stood and stared - we are so thankful and blessed that we are able to provide this home for our family.

This is the master shower. I am so impressed by the tile work done by a family of 3 generations of "Joes" - I had to show it off. We had "Joe", "Middle Joe" and "Little Joe" who worked on the tile and hardwood flooring installation. They are so good at what they do and took such care - it was so neat to watch them work.

Brian and I remain so grateful for the wonderful people who have worked to build us this home. They have all been such really good, hard-working folks who truly care about the job they do. I feel they are truly treating this as if they were building it for themselves and I can't ask for more than that!

Drywall, drywall, drywall....

We have Drywall! It is up everywhere - one guy did our entire house of drywall and he was so particular about it. Simply amazing! The drywall finishers are in now - taping, mudding, spackling and doing their thing. They are done with the upstairs and Brian can start painting today. We went paint shopping last night for the boys' rooms. Barek wants orange and red walls - but no theme; Drake wants Star Wars theme with gray and black walls; Trent wants tractors and trains; Brian wants white so he can just keep painting. Who knows what we'll end up with?

The brick and stone guys are done and Mike and Ron are working on the siding now. The sides of the house are complete and the back is done up to the lights. They stopped to wait on me to pick out my exterior lights so they could make the backer board to fit the bases - I'm the one holding up progress!

Grandma Great - we received your letter -so this is a special picture of 'thumbs up' to you. This was just about 2 weeks ago when we were still having a heat wave and the boys were able to play outside on all the dirt without coats, probably about the last weekend of Nov.

We Are Under Roof

Brian was almost giddy when I got home last night - at one point during the day we had 14 trucks in our driveway at the same time! Bricks, insulation, windows, framers, stone delivery, inspectors, plumber...... it just went on and on.

We are now officially enclosed (minus 2 windows - I made a change), with a front door, shingles, windows and doors.

We were supposed to have brick going on today, but due to the weather they are going to try for tomorrow - this is the first weather delay we have had since we started back in September. Mr. Garrett is amazed by that - he said he's never built a house where he's made it this far without a weather delay - we are thankful for that too!

There was still a lot accomplished today - just on the inside with insulation and plumbing. Drywall was delivered tonight and it's spread throughout the house, so we have bricks and drywall going up tomorrow. We are meeting next week to finalize our cabinet order and then the last thing for us to make a choice on is the flooring.

Shingles have arrived!

It is amazing what can be accomplished in a week! The first picture was taken on 10/29 - the trusses were still being put on and there was no roof sheathing installed. The second picture was taken today, 11/7/10 and we have shingles on most of the roof and windows being put in. The roofers were here yesterday and today because the weather has been wonderful - they just want to keep working!

The boys continue to be thrilled about being able to get up to their rooms - Barek says it is so cool!

Brian is working on the phone, computer and cable wiring right now. Most of the electrical wiring is complete. We walked through with Mike Garrett, our builder, last weekend and talked where all the lighting was going - within 2 days he had all the outlets up and can lights installed. We need to order the propane tank next week so that it can be installed before December because they are already talking drywall. We continue to be thrilled about the progress and very thankful that we are able to do this!

Happy Halloween 2010!

In moving to the country, one of my concerns was how were my boys going to be able to go trick or treating? That was always so much fun when I was growing up and I wanted to make sure they had memories of it too. Well, after this Halloween season (yes, season) my concerns have been laid to rest!

The boys have gone out trick or treating 3 times this past week and were invited to a fourth by a lovely, elderly, 'neighbor' couple who knew we had young boys and wanted to invite them to go trick or treating at their church down the road.

Last week began with us trick or treating at Brian's Aunts' retirement community center. It was wonderful! All of the residents were in the community center sitting on folding chairs passing out all the treats. The kids could go up one side and down the other. There was also 2 clowns making balloons, games and snacks. The boys thought it was so much fun and it was great to see Aunt Frances.

Thursday evening we were invited to a neighborhood in Wilmington by some friends we've made. They have 2 girls Barek's and Drake's ages and a 1 1/2 year old boy that Trent has befriended. The kids all went out with the Dads and the Moms stayed back and passed out candy - I did bring our own candy so we didn't show up empty handed and crash in on a neighborhood! :) The kids were done with the mile loop of the neighborhood in less than an hour - we even made it home to watch "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown". It was a fun evening and the boys so enjoyed themselves. This is how I remember trick or treating!

Then last night, we went to my Mom and Dad's house for a Halloween dinner. Pap and Beam made witches stew, mummy hot dogs, spider sandwiches and all kinds of ghoulish foods - eye balls were even in the boys' chocolate milk. The boys went out to a few houses for more trick or treating, and then spent the second half helping to pass out treats.

So needless to say, we all have had a wonderful Halloween 'season' and thank you to everyone who thought of my boys to include them in your festivities!

Second Floor is Complete!

We have been under construction for less than 2 months and the framing is almost complete. The first and second floors are done, the roof is framed and the shingles are being delivered on Thursday. Brian and I walked the house yesterday with Mr. Garrett and decided where all the electical was going. The kitchen layout is finalized, the wiring in the basement is complete and we have to decide on plumbing stuff - we've picked it all out, just waiting on how far off on budget we are.

Before the stairs were in we let Barek and Drake go up on the ladder - they thought they were such big boys! The stairs are in now so all the boys are able to go up and see their rooms - that is so much fun for them. They have all kinds of great ideas too: Barek wants red carpet, orange walls and a gray ceiling, Drake wants dark gray carpet, blue walls and a Star Wars themed room and Trent wants tractors or trains! We'll see what we end up with.

First floor and garage are taking shape!

In one week, the first floor has been framed. The weather has been wonderful so far and really quite cooperative so no days have been missed. It has been so amazing to see the creation of the rooms and to think where we'll be eating, cooking and playing!

We are only having them reframe one thing so far - a window in the family room. They framed it according to our plans, but we didn't catch that it was a lot smaller than other windows in relation to it.

Today the second floor joists were laid out, so when I get back on Friday, I may have a second floor to see!
